Dan on Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black

Dan on Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black

There's no sense in stalling or mincing words about this book...

I.

LOVED.

IT.

It's a 5-out-of-5, highly superlative-including joy to read!

The combination of the cover (the orangey-red just screams "pick me up") and the blurb (reveals just enough to be tantalizing) had me hooked before I even started.

The first few chapters left me a bit confused. It took me a bit to get a hang of the world and how it works, but what I found is a beautiful world that combines magic and science into a blend that would make Arthur C. Clarke proud.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Is it really magic? Or is it science that we can't understand? Or is science just magic that we understand too well?

You know what? I don't care. The story is just too damn compelling not to shove all the words in my eye-holes. (I do that because they are the only face-holes I've been able to use to get words into my brain-parts).

Who is my favorite character you ask? KIZABEL! I answer resoundingly!

She's brilliant and clever and her chapters are filled with footnotes. Why footnotes? Because she's so smart she can't fit everything directly into her narrative!

What do I like most about this book? That there's going to be more of them!

Yes, yes! It is the first book in a series. I truly hope that there are many, many more books in this series.

I love the magic-science.
I love the tech.
I love the world-building
Most of all I love the characters.

I want to learn everything about them! I want them to do all the things!

So if you're inclined towards sci-fi, do yourself a favor and buy this book! Then read it! Then tell some more people about it because EVERYONE should read Ninth City Burning!

Did I mention that I liked it? Because I did, I did like it!
